“Tweaks Timing” on US 78 Signals to maximize flow during evening
rush hour
GAINESVILLE – Georgia DOT announces adjustments to the signal timing
of signals on US 78 east to improve traffic flow during evening rush
hour through the work zone in Gwinnett County.
“To
remove the reversible lanes and rebuild the road with three lanes in
each direction we had to restripe US 78 as work occurs. Monday
night, we changed the road from East/West Park Place to Stone Drive
so that it has three lanes headed west, two headed east and a center
turn lane. Tuesday evening was the first commute home with the new
lane configuration. In addition to the lane change there was a crash
in the work zone. These things made the Monday commute home along 78
rough, really rough. Yesterday, DOT Engineers went to US 78 and made
adjustments to the signals. Now, this won’t help if there is a crash
in the work zone but it will help the eastbound flow of traffic in
the afternoon. Hopefully you will have a smoother and faster commute
home along 78 today. Please remember this is a work zone and delays
are expected. Each night except Saturday nights crews will work from
7:00pm overnight to 5:00am the next morning. Crews are now working
on the eastbound side of 78, closing the outside lane nightly from
East/West Park Place to Stone Drive. No work is occurring on US 78
except in this first section. The reversible lane system will remain
in place from Stone Drive to SR 124 but will come down as work moves
east,” explained Russell McMurry, DOT District Engineer.
As
work begins in each section the reversible lanes will be removed.
The first section is East Park Place/West Park Place to Stone Drive,
the next section is Stone Drive to Killian Hill Road, then Killian
Hill Road to Highpoint Road and finally Highpoint Road to SR 124.
Once work nears completion in one section crews will begin work in
the next section moving eastward along US 78.
The
projected completion date is November 30, 2009 and its cost is over
$31 million. The project is removing the reversible lane system and
rebuilding US 78 to three lanes in each direction with a raised
concrete median and sidewalks along both sides of the road.
