South Gwinnett
High and Evermore CID building the future
CID endows
"Evermore Chair in Economics and Business"

surrounded by Advanced Economics students, their instructor Terri
Amt, and Evermore community banker Jerry Chapin
The Evermore Community
Improvement District (CID) joins forces with South Gwinnett High
School in building a stronger, brighter future for our corridor. The
CID provided five thousand dollars to establish the "Evermore Chair
in Business and Economics" at South Gwinnett High. The funds will
provide two one thousand dollar scholarships, classroom equipment,
and cover expenses for educational field trips.
Terri
Amt's Advanced Economics class has one such field trip
planned later this month to the Federal Reserve Bank in
Atlanta. Bankers from the Evermore community will join
students on the trip not only as chaperones, but more
importantly, to share real-world business experiences
and encourage the students to continue their studies.
Students will compete for one
thousand dollars scholarships via an essay contest on
business ethics and economics. The CID will present
scholarship checks and the annual SGHS awards night in
May.
For several years,
the Evermore CID has been providing services to support and enhance
public safety, highway beautification, economic development, and
community vitality. The commitment and goals of the Evermore CID
continue to expand beyond transportation improvements and a median
safety project; the Evermore CID is also dedicated to fostering our
future leaders through educational partnerships and academic
support.
The Evermore CID
most recently formed a partnership with South Gwinnett High School’s
(SGHS) Economics and Business Department to provide well-deserved
recognition for the program and their AP (Advanced Placement) and CP
(College Prep) students. On March 14, 2008, Evermore CID Executive
Director Brett Harrell presented a $5000 grant to SGHS Principal
Berry Simmons, SGHS Economics and Business Instructors Terri Amt and
Denise Watkins, and SGHS Economics and Business students.
The Evermore CID
grant will provide interactive learning opportunities for the
business program students. South Gwinnett will use grant funds to
acquire Business Education Videos that educate students on business
etiquette, work habits, communication skills, and success in the
workplace; educational stock market training games; and other
learning tools and equipment. The funding also makes possible a
class field trip to the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta, later this
month with several Evermore community business leaders joining the
students for the day.
The Evermore CID
grant will also sponsor two annual scholarships in the amount of
$1000 each. After completing the application process, a panel of
judges will select one well-deserving business student and economics
student to receive the Evermore scholarships. The students who
receive these scholarships will exemplify what the future of our
community desires – intelligent, dedicated, motivated
entrepreneurs. To qualify, the candidate must have a high
cumulative GPA, complete an essay on work ethics or economics, and
have plans to continue their education in a business related field.
It is the Evermore
CID’s intention to encourage the brightest students in our community
to continue their studies through high school and college, and
one-day return to Evermore to pursue their professional careers.
Evermore Executive Director Brett Harrell, a SGHS graduate, was
gratified by the student’s enthusiasm over their upcoming field trip
and reminded them that sometimes the best opportunities in life have
always been in our own backyard.
